Frequently Asked Questions
New to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Here are answers to the questions we hear most often from people considering their first class.
Getting Started
Do I need any experience to join?
No experience is required. Every SBG Borneo member starts as a complete beginner. Our coaches are trained to work with people at all levels, and our curriculum is specifically designed to bring new students along safely and confidently.
What should I expect on my first day?
You will be welcomed by a coach and introduced to the basics before you ever step onto the mat with a partner. Expect to learn some fundamental movement, a technique or two, and finish with a short guided roll (practice match). It will feel unfamiliar — that is completely normal. Most people leave their first class smiling.
How fit do I need to be to start?
You do not need to be fit to start. BJJ will get you fit. Come as you are. The training is physically demanding, but coaches pace beginners appropriately. Fitness follows consistency.
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first trial class, comfortable athletic clothing is fine — board shorts or gym leggings and a rash guard or fitted T-shirt work well. Avoid clothing with belt loops, zips, or hard buttons that can injure training partners. Once you join, you will need a gi (the traditional BJJ uniform) for gi classes.
Do I need to bring my own gi?
Not for your first class. We can lend you a gi for trial sessions. Once you become a member, you will be expected to have your own. We can advise on where to purchase one locally.
What to Expect
What does a typical class look like?
A standard class runs about 60–90 minutes and follows this structure:
- Warm-up — movement drills, shrimping, bridging, and basic BJJ locomotion.
- Technique — the coach demonstrates a technique or short chain of moves. Partners drill it together.
- Positional sparring — live practice starting from a specific position.
- Free rolling — full rounds of live grappling. Beginners may be guided through this rather than rolling freely.
Is BJJ safe? Will I get hurt?
BJJ has a strong safety culture. Submissions are held until the partner “taps” (signals they yield), and tapping is respected immediately. Beginners are paired with experienced, responsible partners. Minor bumps and mat burn are common; serious injuries are rare when coaches set the tone correctly — which ours do.
How long does it take to get a blue belt?
Belt promotions at SBG Borneo are based entirely on skill, attitude, and time on the mat — not a fixed schedule. A typical white-to-blue journey is 1–2 years of consistent training, though this varies widely. We do not sell belts or guarantee timelines. Promotions happen when they are genuinely earned.
Will I be forced to compete?
Never. Competition is entirely optional. Many of our members train purely for fitness, self-defense, or the enjoyment of learning. Competitions are encouraged for those who want them, not required for anyone.
Hygiene & Etiquette
What are the hygiene rules?
Good hygiene protects everyone on the mat. The following are non-negotiable:
- Shower before training if you have been active during the day.
- Clean gi every session. No exceptions. A dirty gi is a health risk to your training partner.
- Clip your fingernails and toenails short before class. Long nails cause cuts and skin infections.
- No shoes on the mat — and no bare feet off the mat. Flip-flops when you step off.
- Cover all open cuts before stepping on the mat.
- Stay home if you are sick. Skin infections (ringworm, staph) spread quickly in grappling environments. If you have any skin condition you are unsure about, see a doctor before returning.
- Tie up long hair.
- Mouthguard is recommended for sparring.
What if I notice a skin infection or illness?
Tell a coach immediately. We take skin infections seriously. You will be asked to rest until it has cleared and been confirmed by a doctor. This is not a punishment — it protects you and everyone else in the gym.
What are the general mat etiquette rules?
- Bow or touch hands when stepping onto and off the mat.
- Tap early and tap often — there is no shame in tapping.
- Respect your training partner. Go lighter with beginners.
- Listen when the coach is talking. Stop drilling and give full attention.
- No ego. Everyone gets submitted. It is part of the learning process.
